Waterdown - All Riot (Victory, 2006)
Waterdown's third release, All Riot, was my first taste of this German band that mixes different styles within the hardcore/metal/punk genres. My first impression of them was that they are a straight up hardcore band with metal influence. With the release of All Riot, Waterdown welcomed a new second vocalist, Michael Janczak, to even out the lineup. Janczak brings a more melodic vocal to compliment the harsher vocals of Ingo Reiser.
All Riot attempts to deliver catchy, in-your-face hardcore, but doesn't always succeed. Some of the tracks lose their interest due to simple breakdowns and other unimpressive elements. The biggest asset Waterdown brings to the table is the diversity in their sound. At times I felt like I was listening to Comeback Kid and then a minute later I felt like I was listening to Madball. One of the strongest tracks was "Cut the Cord," a song definitely worthy of some radio time.
Overall, I enjoyed this release, even though at times it failed to keep my attention. Waterdown has a lot of potential, and with Victory Records backing them, they will get the chance to reach an audience that should really get into their diverse, post-hardcore style.
