Ligeia - Your Ghost is a Gift (Ferret, 2006)
The first time I listened to Ligeia’s debut Your Ghost is a Gift I thought that they sounded like every other metalcore group out right now and figured it was just another Ferret Records release. The second and third time that I listened to the album I started to hear some potential. They are heavily influenced by bands that have defined the scene today, such as Poison the Well and Killswitch Engage. These similarities with other artists could possibly be their downfall.
The album is full of power and intensity complemented by melodic styling. Keith Holuk’s vocals are solid, but at times a little cheesy and unfitting. Despite that, there are definitely some impressively original elements buried underneath this run-of-the-mill metalcore act. In fact, Your Ghost is a Gift was produced by Ken Susi, who is best known for playing guitar for the band Unearth. The record has a lot of potential and should easily find a home in plenty of people’s CD players and iPods.
I myself am already anticipating Ligeia’s sophomore release because that truly will be what defines them. For now, Your Ghost is a Gift should gain the group a decent following. The key thing for Ligeia to focus on now is making themselves stand out from other acts. As it stands now they are just another metalcore bands from New England. Either way, Ligeia’s debut will have most metalcore fans saying, “not half bad.”
