So-Cal Show and Album Reviews

Coheed and Cambria @ The Glass House, Pomona 8/14/2006

What makes a show great? Great Guitars? Driving Drums, Funky Bass?
Sing-a-long lyrics? A fierce pit? Dueling guitar solos? These are all great things
but what do audience members really remember? That's right, my friend, lasers.

Lots of them. Varying colors and intensity. That's what I remember most about Monday night's show at the Glass House with Coheed and Cambria, with Facing New York. That's not to say the other things weren't there, because they were. Travis Stever and Claudio Sanchez showed amazing guitar chops as they went through the bands discography with style (Sanchez) and finesse (Stever). Always a crowd pleaser, Sanchez played his Gibson Explorer both behind his head, and with his teeth (though, regrettably, not at the same time). I was surprised how many of the leads Sanchez plays himself, a formidable task given the complexities of the vocal harmonies and the speed of the guitar riffs.

Sanchez and Stever were joined by Matt Williams on bass and MP on drums. Micheal Todd and Josh Eppard have not toured with the band in August and their status in the band is unknown. The two replacements did a wonderful job filling in, though, laying down a wonderful backbone as the two guitarists played off each other during the ending of “Welcome Home”, exactly as the album sounds. Other songs included: “Blood Red Summer”, “The Suffering”, “Delirium Trigger”, “Ten Speed”, “Faint of Heart” (my favorite!), and they ended the show with “The Final Cut”. Finally, there was another set of dueling guitar solos that went on for about 15 minutes as the band jammed for a little while.

There was a lot of great music and showmanship on Monday, but I'll never forget those lasers.
